GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Finance is responsible for the strategic and day to day management of the museum’s financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, audit coordination, internal controls and financial reporting. This position ensures compliance with nonprofit generally accepted accounting principles and standards. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Finance partners closely with the CEO, Finance Committee, and department heads to support sound financial decision making and long-term sustainability.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
LEADERSHIP
- Works with the CEO and the Senior Leadership Team to create operational plans that are consistent with the strategic vision and plan; have achievable and measurable objectives; and are implemented on time and on budget
- Supervises a Staff Accountant, and outsourced vendors where applicable
- Monitors implementation of plan and achievement of goals and objectives
- Advises on strategic deployment of resources and cost-saving measures
- Fosters cross-departmental collaboration within the museum
- Other specific projects assigned by the CEO
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT and REPORTING
- Oversees all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and account reconciliations.
- Prepares timely and accurate monthly financial statements, including the statement of financial position, statement of activities, actual to budget variance reports, and cash flow projections.
- Presents financial reports to senior leadership and the Finance Committee.
BUDGETING and FORECASTING
- Leads the development of the annual operating and capital projects budgets.
- Coordinates departmental budget submissions and consolidates into museum-wide budgets.
- Prepares forecasts and scenario analyses, supporting strategic planning
- Partners with department heads to provide financial analysis and budget oversight.
CASH FLOW and TREASURY MANAGEMENT
- Monitors cash balances daily.
- Manages banking relationships and investment accounts.
- Forecasts cash needs and ensures adequate reserves.
- Oversees debt service when applicable.
AUDIT and COMPLIANCE
- Coordinates the annual financial audit and preparation of audit schedules.
- Liaisons with CPA firm in connection with preparation of the Form 990
- Ensures compliance with grant agreements, donor restrictions, and governmental reporting requirements.
- Maintains internal controls and accounting policies.
FUND ACCOUNTING and RESTRICTED GIFTS
- Oversees accounting for contributions and grants, net assets with donor restrictions, endowments, and releases from donor restrictions.
- Works closely with Advancement staff to reconcile fundraising records and ensure proper revenue recognition.
OPERATIONAL SUPPORT
- Evaluates systems and recommends process improvements.
- Maintains accounting software and related systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- MBA or applicable Master’s degree or CPA designation a plus.
- At least 7 years of progressive nonprofit accounting and finance experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Museum operational experience strongly preferred.
- Strong business acumen, with experience developing and implementing financial and strategic operating plans.
- Highly developed communication skills (written/verbal/visual); excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to successfully navigate multiple priorities.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP and fund accounting.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with CRM systems and donor databases such as Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, Altru, etc.
- Team-oriented and courteous; must be able to encourage open discussion of different ideas and views, welcoming and soliciting input; a keen and empathetic listener.
HOURS OF POSITION
Full-time, 40 hours per week-Exempt/Salaried
